ON THE EDGE
(GR, 1993, 80 min)
D: Dito Tsintsadze

A conversation with director Dito Tsintsadze about his debut film ON THE EDGE.

SYNOPSIS
A civil war is on the horizon in Georgia. The armed conflict is about to break out. A young physicist (George Nakashidze) tries to preserve his independence and initially isolates himself from his surroundings. He wants to leave the country with his girlfriend (Lika Guntsadze), but is ultimately unable to escape the political events. Without any direct reference to his own country or regional conflicts in the early 1990s, Dito Tsintsadze creates a visual no-man’s land on the brink of dissolution and laconically tells the story of a man who wants to be impartial but has to realize that this is not possible.

ABOUT
Dito Tsintsadze was born in 1957 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Between 1975 and 1981, he studied at the Institute of Dramatic Art and Cinematography. Initially an assistant director, he directed his first short film GUESTS in 1990. In 1993, he directed his first feature ON THE VERGE (Silver Leopard at the Locarno Festival), followed in 2000 by LOST KILLERS, presented at the Cannes Festival in the Un Certain Regard category. His third feature, GUN SHY was awarded the Concha de oro at the San Sebastian Festival in 2003.
