A conversation with director Henner Winckler and co-writer Stefan Kriekhaus about their debut film CLASS TRIP.

SYNOPSIS
A school class travels to the Polish Baltic Sea. The students don't exactly find the vacation resort exciting in the off-season. Between table tennis, day trips and binge drinking, 16-year-old Ronny and his classmate Isa develop a cautious relationship. They meet Marek from Poland at a disco. As a threesome, Ronny quickly realizes that Marek is more interested in Isa than in him. Ronny begins to challenge Marek again and again until it finally comes to a test of courage.

ABOUT
Henner Winckler was born in Giessen in 1969. From 1990 to 1993, he studied visual communication with a focus on film at the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) in Offenbach am Main. He then studied film at the Hochschule für bildende Künste (HfbK) in Hamburg until 1998. Winckler's feature film debut CLASS TRIP depicts the everyday events of a tenth grade class trip to the Baltic Sea in a laconic, realistic tone. The film premiered in the Berlinale Forum in 2002. Winckler's second feature film LUCY (2006), about the conflicts and hopes of an 18-year-old single mother, also premiered in the Berlinale Forum. Together with Ulrich Köhler, Winckler made his third feature film in 2018: THE VOLUNTARY YEAR, about a high school graduate in the German provinces who wants to emancipate herself from her single father's plans for the future. The film premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2019.

Stefan Kriekhaus was born in Haan in 1968 and grew up in Giessen. He has lived in Berlin since 1992, where he studied history and cultural studies at Humboldt University. In 2005, he made the short film BADEN, which he also directed for the first time. His short film REMAINS QUIET (2013) won the Silver Bear at Berlinale.
