A conversation with director Corneliu Porumboiu and film critic Jay Weissberg.

SYNOPSIS
It's December 22nd. Sixteen years have passed since the Revolution and Christmas is approaching. Pisconi, a retired old man, is preparing to spend Christmas alone once again. Manescu, a history teacher, doesn't want to lose his entire salary paying off his debts. Meanwhile, Jderescu, the owner of the local TV station, doesn't seem too keen on the vacations. With the help of Piscoci and Manescu, he wants to find the answer to a sixteen-year-old question: was there really a revolution in their town?

ABOUT
Corneliu Porumboiu was born in Vaslui, Romania, in 1975. He studied cinema at Bucharest's "I.L.Caragiale" University, graduating in 2003. His two short films made that same year attracted international attention: CALATORIA LA ORAS won second prize at the 2004 Cinéfondation, followed by VISUL LUI LIVIU. In his first feature, 12:08 EAST OF BUCHAREST, Porumboiu offers a humorous take on the Romanian revolution of 1989. The film was presented at the 2006 Directors' Fortnight in Cannes and won the Caméra d'Or. Corneliu Porumboiu continues his subtle reflection on form and dissection of Romanian society in Policier, ADJECTIF, selected for the 2009 Certain Regard (Jury Prize and Fipresci Prize).

He was the co-curator for the Capellani programme at Bologna’s Cinema Ritrovato, and is one of the organizers of the Ottoman Film Project. A frequent participant of festival juries, he has traveled throughout Europe, the Arab world and Latin America to cover film events. He has been a guest of the Harvard Film Archives/Gulbenkian Foundation’s Cinema Dialogues, as well as acted as mentor in initiatives for young film critics.
